Ōtākaro | Avon River
The Ōtākaro weaves itself through the city CBD. It’s Māori name Ōtakaro, was renamed after the Avon River in Ayrshire, home of the Deans brothers, local settler farmers in mid 1800’s. In pre-European times the Ōtakaro was an important mahinga kai site for Ngāi Tahu. It has been recorded that the inner city stretch was inhabited by Puari, a Waitaha pā stretched along the banks close to Victoria Square.

In this 60 minute tour we follow the river from the last existing working boat shed and follow the footsteps of our ancestors, bringing to life many traditional Māori narratives and ways of life.

We will introduce the whakamanuhiri process of welcome and how this has been represented for all peoples visiting Christchurch.
We will also introduce the guiding principle of the rebuild for our tribe Ngāi Tahu.
‘Kia atawhai ki te iwi’, Care for your people.

We continue our walk past traditional mahinga kai sites, pā sites and bring to life the narratives of the more modern māori interpretation that has been woven into our emerging city.

Mōrena | Good Morning.
We look forward to exploring our city CBD with you. We start our morning by meeting for coffee at one of our city’s less known gems. Once we have done our intros, taught you about a traditional māori greeting and got to know each other, we will wander our city lane ways, green spaces and show you hidden gems that may never reach the guidebooks.

After around 90 mins we will make our way to one of our city’s delightful eating establishments, and depending on the day of the week we may be able to seek out a cheeky cocktail or local craft beer for those who request it.

We can also find fudge tasting, discover local history, city orchards and vegetable gardens, and even bee hives. If you prefer we can stick to historical and arts pathways. With so much to see, our guided walking tour can change to accommodate what the group is keen for on the day. If you are jet lagged, or up for a surprise then you can simply say “surprise us” and we will include our favorite spots. and a taster of what Christchurch central offers.
